cvs -d:ext:address@hidden:/projects/gcl co -r \
Version_2_6_2 gcl 

should do the trick.  The command you posted would take a snapshot of
the latest development version. the 'stable' 2.6.2 is specifically
designed to support maxima, acl2, and axiom while we try to make gcl
cvs head ansi compliant.
