Try replacing python with pythonw inside gm-from-cvs.sh. Also
try to "make an icon calling 'pythonw gnumed.py'" directly
instead of from a shell window.
Also try adding a & at the end of either
bash> gm-from-cvs.sh &
or inside that file at the end of
.../pythonw gnumed.py &

I would assume there should have been if things had worked
normally.

Yes. I don't think you need to be logged in as local admin
even. Any user should be fine. However, in some cases you may
need to set the DISPLAY environment variable.
