Now that the origin of this at-first-strange-seeming behaviour isunderstood, I have found a local solution which (on the Mac) is the menucommand Window > Zoom ...Good.is it the same on Linux?Sort of. One can grab one of the window edges and resize them by dragging. It all depends on what the window manager supports for resizing.
The problem on the Mac (if one did not use the zoom) is that overly large windows appear built referenced from the bottom. The resize tool appears in the bottom right corner but will not reposition the top which remains out of view. The bottom or sides on the Mac will not move in response to drag-click, only the top of the window can be selected to move it which is no help if it is out of view. Therefore thank <deity> for the Zoom :-)
