I confused stings with number registers.
.nr n1 2i
.ds s1 2i
gives, for a device unit of 72000
n1=144000
s1="2i"
Then \[n1]u is in units evaluating to 2 inches again,
and \[s1] is just 2 inches.
So it seems using strings is more natural.
