I've had 2 sessions of emacs running for the past 24 hours, one with -Q
and I still see no slowdown there, the other run with --no-desktop in
which I ran VM (which I use for email and where I originally saw a
slowness problem - which *may* be related to the problem I then found in
dired) there also there's no slowness. In the -Q session I did very
little other than an occasional test of dired speed. In the other
session I only ran VM and dired.

So it would appear to be either what I'm loading in .emacs.desktop or
what I'm doing after that in that session which causes that symptom to
gradually appear. I've never seen the problem with an emacs session
which lasts less than c 2 hours.
