'make test', or 'make check'? Also, if bluetooth is not detected, that
test should not be run. Writing a proper 'beginner guide' is on my list,
but sadly not on top.

As your peer did not connect to the overlay, that's not surprising at all.

Oh. http://gnunet.org/ turned out to be down this morning, no idea why
(except that the Apache process somehow was no longer there, nothing in
the logs except for the kernel complaining about a SYN flood).
I've restarted it...

I'm not sure which exact version is running on sam/fulcrum here, but
somehow you're not connecting to it. Did you try gnunet-transport -t?
> $ gnunet-statistics
Those just show that your peer did not succeed at connecting to the overlay;
with the hostlist being down possibly being one significant contributor...
