Before doing the more complicated tests can you just try if fload works with 
this build?

i.e.:

x = pi;
name = tmpnam;
save ("-binary", name, "x");
y = load ("-binary", name, "x");
assert (x, y.x)
z = load (name, "x");
assert (x, z.x)
