That's really only true of Major label releases (and even here many of
the copyrights are owned by publishing companies which may or may not be
owned by the artist), its much less true of Independent labels -- and
here where copyright is owned by the label, its doesn't mean the artist
doesn't own the copyright, because its not that uncommon for labels to
be artist owned.
I just looked thought the stack of 10 CD's (all independent labels) I
happened to have on the table in front of me and 9 out of 10 were artist
owned copyrights (the one that was not seems to be the first release
form that label so it might well be artist owned).
