Simon,

Getting PulseAudio to work for the first time can be an aggravating
experience.  If pulseaudio has no sound, you may wish to check that
your audio devices are not being blocked by other processes.
Flashplayer often grabs the devices.  My first suggestion would be to
close your browser.
