I have tried with a 3000 users. How many do you got in yours
? I've tried to chown 3000 files. It did work.

Anyway, it should not even matter. nscd should only use its
opened connections in all situations. There might be a race
somewhere.

I've just received the patch and will look at it soon. (BTW,
next time please provide an unified diff, I have a terrible
time parsing context diffs :-)

Sure, it probably works great for small environments. 
However, if you have a process that is doing lots of chown's
nscd doesn't seem to realize it has connections open so it
just opens more and more until the SQL server runs out of
threads.

I'll recompile with debug and test it on one of our servers
and get you the output.  I just sent you the patch for the
select fixes.
