Thanks for the bug report.
I'll have a look, but don't expect a quick fix as I'll be away some of the
next weeks :-)

As far as "regression" goes, I'm with Markus as to his question about older io
package versions. It's quite possible that older io package versions don't
portray this specific bug but I _suppose_ the relevant piece of code has been
added to fix some other bug(s).

How has the relevant .xlsx file been made? (which Excel version?) or was it
made by some other program and subsequently modified using Excel?
And as Markus mentioned, if you can, please upload an .xlsx file with which
this bug can be reproduced.

Also, rather than a complete patched function, please supply a "diff -u"
relative to the unpatched function file so that we can see what changes you
have made.
