I was thinking here of the auto-mount on device plug-in. For the Windows 
NTFS volumes I already have edited /etc/fstab to add the 'noexec' option.

As for the problem with Pan save permissions, I am trying to arrange as 
fool-proof a PC for family & friends as possible, so manually mounting a 
verity of USB devices is really not an option.

A quick trial showed nothing that pointed to an easy solution :(
