Hi!
What I do on my laptop is actually to create an additional user in the
same group for the gnome-session, run gnome on one display and stumpwm
on other.
These allows me to switch to full GNOME with one keystroke when I need
that (which I do rarely, but somietimes you need a less harsh
enviroment with floating windows), this also starts up all the GNOME
services. Overhead is that you have almost unneeded session of GNOME,
but that works just fine even on my laptop.
