I'm not sure distributions are relevant here: they can put whatever
they want into their packages. They could choose to leave contrib
out, or to include external contrib packages, or to package them
separately so that they'd appear in 'aptitude search stumpwm'. They
can even choose to distribute stumpwm as a binary in which case the
average user is never going to see the source tree, and won't get the
contrib unless the maintainer chooses to build it in.
As I said, examples are one thing that probably should remain in the
main repo (and in the distribution case, would probably be installed
alongside documentation).
