Maybe it would be better, instead of trying to work around libtool and  
AC_PROG_SED, which could easily break in the future.  Just have a  
completely separate macro that searches for GNU sed, then in the few  
cases in the source code where we specifically need GNU sed, then we  
uses a different variable like GSED to access it instead of plain sed.

My guess is that the normal sed should work fine for all the autoconf  
stuff, that is what AC_PROG_SED should be checking.  We just need GNU  
sed for the template processing?
