As someone pointed out, the PDF back end is incomplete and
unsupported.  Adding support for *isolated* PDF features like
this one does not strike me as a good use of anyone's time.
Adding *comprehensive* PDF support would be an enormous job
and is basically impossible anyway since Lout's graphical
packages (e.g. @Diag and @Graph) rely on large PostScript
prepend files, for which there is no PDF equivalent.
