I have had no problems with "gettext-0.10.35.tar.gz." The top of NEWS
in that package says: "Version 0.10.35 - April 1998, by Ulrich Drepper."
Are there newer/better versions available? AFAIK, Fran\347ois Pinard
seems to be doing the brunt of the work; perhaps we can get an update
from him on the status of the GNU gettext package?
