Yes, these merging assertion failures seem much more worrying, so
fixing those seems much more important (presumably by implementing a
new merging method).

It might be worth someone (preferably more than one person) writing
down expected (or actual, in CVS or other systems) uses of keyword
expansion.  

I don't doubt that there are such uses, but some systems seem to have
keyword expansion, and some don't seem to (I'm fairly sure GNU Arch in
particular is another one that doesn't; I don't recall it being
mentioned for darcs or codeville, but that may well be my memory
rather than their functionality), so it's not clear to me how
important they are.  

For example I'd guess it's possible that subversion has them just
because CVS does, and subversion is trying to be a convenient (and
fairly low-impact) replacement for CVS.
