Re: Reply to header

Ok, this is the third e-mail that I have sent in reply to this thread, each one complicated (in a different way) by the lack of a reply-to header.

The first one, I took the time to make sure that when I replied to Tom, my message got sent to the list.

The second one, after realising that the first had bounced because I sent it from the wrong address, I replied again... forgetting to add the list as a recipient.

This one, finally, I am using the reply-all command, so two people, who I know are subscribers to the list, are going to receive two copies of this e-mail... because I do not have a command to reply-only-to-list (which is what reply-to would do).

I vote for adding the header. It does make it a little easier for those of us whose mail client doesn't do our dishes as well. (That is me bashing mutt, not because it is not a great mail client, but because the people who use it tend to worship it and declare that all other mail clients are evil and worthless.)

 David,

Double replies occur only, if the author is a subscriber.

So on lists, where anyone can post ( like LKML ) , Reply-To:
would be bad ( becuase the original author would not get a reply,
unless you add him manually ).

On lists, where only subscribers can post, Reply-To: might be good.

Fair enough.  Which type are we ?

Subscribers only.  This should probably be advertised somewhere.

Personally, sending an email to a list I wasn't subscribed to would
never even occur to me. It would be like posting to a newsgroup I never
read: roughly akin to shouting a question off the side of a cliff then
walking away. But perhaps that's just me. :)

I have to admit it is a toss up.   I set this list to "subscribers only" because I get enough spam as it is (some from open lists, which I find especially annoying).  However it is sometimes annoying to have to subscribe to a mailing list just to ask 1 question about the subject matter.

 Tom
