You are already using tramp under the hood.

The main point _for me_ is keeping the remote file encrypted (for
security), but local file plain text (for git).

Uploading the huge bbdb file on _every save_ will introduce a highly
unwelcome latency.

I don't use `bbdb-file-remote' (because it is unencrypted) anyway.
