Even if it were changed to `required' today, it would be a long
time before you could actually depend on it, though.

[The wording in the current GNU standards is a bit silly -- it seem to
make an effort to emphasize that DESTDIR is optional (`if you really,
really, really, want to, and don't mind spending all the extra time and
effort, and definitely REALLY want to, you can support DESTDIR like
this...').  It sounds almost like the grudging response to a flamewar...]
