Yeah, I think that's close to reality.  I don't remember the details
though; it was a while ago.

Another little secret like this in the standards is the
`install-strip' argument.  That was Richard's response to a suggestion
from François.  Unfortunately Richard ignored existing practice and
instead added a new target which turned out to be surprisingly hard to
implement correctly.
