I was involved in a spread across the globe design
session not to terribly long ago that used both IRC
and a mail list together.  The IRC meetings were
scheduled every four hours over two days.  You joined
the ones that you could.  The meat of the work was on
the mail list.  It was not really possible to produce
any usable documentation from the IRC, bit it helped
with clarifying a number of things as the project
evolved.
