All the alternatives to "free software" have disadvantages of their
own.  For instance, "freed software" is harder to say, and usually not
accurate--most free programs were born free, and thus were not at any
time freed.  No alternative seems to be sufficiently better as to make
it a good idea to switch.  (A change of name for the movement would
have great costs.)

It is easy enough to tell people the right understanding for "free
software" by adding "(free as in freedom)" occasionally.  This is not
as much of a problem as it is sometimes made out to be.  See
