Runlevel 3 is probably set up to start the XServer and stick
the login manager up front. If you exit that it'll probably
shut down the machine (although there should be an option 'go
to "DOS"' somewhere in the login manager close to the exit
button).

However, you can always use <CTRL-ALT-Fn> where n=1-6 to get
to a console even while X is running. From there you should be
able to "kill -TERM pid", "kill -KILL pid" or "killall xxx"
where xxx is the process name of your X server.

Yes. This is because they provide binary only drivers. Such
ugly things only work with a few specific kernel releases.
That's why they wrote a wrapper that on the one end speaks the
API of *this* binary driver version and on the other end
figures out the API of the kernel in question at compile time.
And compile time is when the abovementioned script is run on
your machine effectively interfacing the binary driver to your
kernel.
