My understanding is that we can license our Python code any way we want (as
long as we are the copyright owners).

Our Python code after all will not link statically to any of the third party
libraries used; using QT just puts a hurdle in the way of our Windows users
which may limit the takeup speed of gnumed once it is out, but will else have
little impact on the project and none on our licensing as I understand it.

I believe that an *additional* QT client (and Java client for that matter)
will only enrich the project and open up options for even more users.
I doubt it will take developer ressources away from the current "mainstream"
wx client - the opposite might happen since we might get more people
involved, and hence more working on the GUI independent "business object"
layer.
