I am going to create a Debian-knoppix partition on my computer and try again. Do we have Debian instructions?
apt-get install postgresql python2.3-pygresql libwxgtk2.4-python

will meet all your dependencies, then edit /etc/postgres/pg_hba.conf and
replace its contents with:

local    all   postgres                                        ident sameuser
local    all         all                                             md5
host    all         all     127.0.0.1   255.255.255  md5

then go to gnumed/gnumed/server/bootstrap
and run bootstrap-gm_db_system.py
you need to run it 4 times, options 5, 4, 3 and 6 in that order. [*]

Blond question I am afraid but I'm stuck. I get to 5 on my debian testing box, get part way through the script and then get:-
Do you really want to install this database setup ?
Type yes or no: yes
==> bootstrapping service [default] (= config) ...
I need the password for the GnuMed database user [postgres].
Please type password:

The shell postgres password and 'postgres' do not work. I can connect to template1 with psql from the postgres user but pgaccess fails with the same authentication refusal. Is this something I should have set in the postgres installation? Where can I set it now?
