The barcode is printed and supplied in batches by the lab. It is not generated
by GNUmed and it needs to be entered into GNUmed by staff to associate a
result with a patient. There is currently no way to generate an identifier and
supply that to the lab. There never will be I suppose. In the hospital I work
(not GNUmed) we have a different situation. This is not of concern to GNUmed
however. In the hospital the lab supplies a software where you can order tests
to be done on a sample. You basically enter an order into their system. When
you have selected the tests to be performed the barcode printer spits out a
label which can be attached to the tube.
No physician's offices I know of have that kind of connection to the lab so I
would not worry about it. I guess for Germany the barcode is as good as it
gets. For the rest of the world where the lab is totally independent we will
have to rely on what the lab tells us in terms of info on the patient. Even if
all records seems to match you still cannot be sure that the lab did not screw
up. So the only safe bet you have is a signed piece of paper from the lab.
