Correct & that’s part of the reason Gary was recommending to NOT use SystemD for managing GPSd.

A gpsd client and using SHM are two different things

Ah, no.  SHM is very much OK for clients.  CLients can connecto to gpsd
over the network, or SHM:

I am not saying that SHM is not OK for clients, just not a gpsd client
in the sense of systemd socket activation.
