Hitting vd does the trick.

Yes. If you're running mldonkey on the firewall host just open
4001/tcp (or whatever port you're using) for incoming connections.
If mldonkey runs on a different host you have to open a port
on the firewall and you have to forward that port to the
mldonkey host.

What's the output of "telnet your_host 4080"?
Whatever, it should work. No other port is needed as far as I know.
Maybe 4080/tcp is in use already? Then just use another port.
Open 56789/tcp on the firewall forwarding it to mldonkey:4080.
Same with the gui channel.
