to clarify why I think I nailed it down here is what I did:

starting vanilla install of mld (newest cvs)

10 set max_sources_per_file=500, min_left_sources=200,
   good_sources_threshold=75 (default)
20 started download of one popular file only
30 as soon as mld has found 500 sources and starts
   dropping the download goes to zero KB/s after 5 min
40 then setting max_sources_per_file=5000 gets me back
   to 30-40 KB/s download after a short while
50 stable download
60 set max_sources_per_file back to 500
70 mld droppes a lot of sources, so far so good, then
   aborts (!) transfering connections, after 5 min all is dead.
80 GOTO 40

so one workaround is to set sources so high they never get reached.
what helps a bit is setting min_left_sources and good_sources_threshold 
to values equal or only slightly below max_sources_per_file.

all other settings seem to have no effect (as far as I have tried)
