I basically agree with Bobby on this.  We can live with miscoloured
smileys, and Eric's could have circumvented his problem by changing the
preferences for valid quoting characters, i.e. removing ":".

A compromise may be removing ":" from the default characters accepted
for quoting, although I prefer the present default.

But since Pan only uses ">" when composing, it may:
- Check only for lines starting with ">" when *sending* a message.
- Continue accepting other characters in the preferences when
  *displaying* text in the body pane.

BTW, if I remove the blank line between the attribution and the quoted
text, Pan doesn't refuse posting.  (But if I don't add a smiley, I get
the warning about top-posting.)

Sounds rather complicated for such a marginal problem, IMHO.
And smileys would still be miscoloured in the body pane.

Another solution would be if Pan recognised the most common smileys.
