Then it would also be necessary with a method for expiring old completed
tasks, e.g. by showing only the N most recent ones and/or clearing the
list of completed tasks when Pan is closed.

You can:  Edit->Preferences->Download->Tasks, click "Help" next to "Save
attachments in directory" for info.

If you define a custom filter and use that from the Filter menu, Pan
will keep it when switching groups.  (Using custom filters requires
Pan >= 0.13.0.92)
