I second Ducan's view.
With sorted by the threads oldest post I can easily look through the
header view and look for the thread that "started after that other
thread"

This is basically my point of view as well..
Maybe it is becasue I'm used to the current sorting for years - and not
only in newsreaders, but also in my mailreader, in Webfrontends,...

Forums might behave differntly, but I don't use those....
