What you might want to do is use the 2 versions in tandem for a period
of time. I actually find the new Pan faster and better at large groups
than before. But loading all headers at once can cause some problems.
(Although I have 2GB of RAM, so Pan can handle a lot more headers than
it used to be able to.)

Grab, say, the last weeks worth of headers - then from that point on
just get new headers and delete unwanted ones until you eventually are
just grabbing new headers every day or 3.
I basically have kept the old version around to make sure that I'm not
missing any articles while I populate the new version.

alt.binaries.multimedia is a HUGE group, and Pan is now loading new
headers like a champ.
