I've never used stunnel, but that used to be the recommended solution,
before pan's own secure connection support.

AFAIK, it should be possible to setup additional tunnels as well, to work
with additional servers. The key is to setup each one listening on a
different local port, and then tell pan the correct local port to use for
each one. The one known problem with that, is that pan's server dialog
used to only show the host name in the list. Different ports could still
be used and it would work, but they ended up in the list as all
"localhost", since the ports didn't show up there. FWIW, that has now
been fixed as well, the port shows up as well as the host name, so
multiple localhost connections can be distinguished by port, but I don't
think that's in a release, yet.

I'm a kde guy, but certainly had issues with the early kde4. I did
upgrade, but it was by switching to non-kde software in some cases, and
in others, creating my own scripted solutions, etc. So I know the
feeling.

But I keep reading that the Mint's Cinnamon interface is quite good. Of
course as I said I'm not a gnome person, so have little personal opinion
except that neither gnome2 nor gnome3 are my thing, but the reviews all
seem to indicate that cinnamon's a reasonably gnome2 like interface to
gnome3. Is that not the case, that likeness is there, but as they say
only skin deep, and not sufficient for you, or have you not tried and
you're simply staying with what you know works for the time being?

Like many upstream projects, pan's version releases are source tarballs.
If binary packages are available, it's because various distros and/or
individual community volunteers have built and packaged it themselves,
and made their packages available for others to use, as well.

For a few years back in the mid 80s I lived in Lincoln, NE, and remember
the tornado watches and occasional warnings. But IDR anything actually
doing anything like the damage now reported for Texas, in the area during
that time.

I guess Texas is in sort of a bad spot. It gets BOTH tornadoes and
hurricanes to deal with!

None of that here in Phoenix and no earthquakes either. Not much flood
danger either. Just 45-50C (113-122F) summer days to deal with. "But
it's a dry heat!" (R) =:^)

My normal transit is via city bus, however, and I'm sure glad that the
recent bus driver's strike lasted only ~1 week, and was in March (over
spring break, actually), when the temps were tolerable for waiting three
hours for a bus during the day, and riding the bike home at nite! =:^)
