This is a good idea, and the way that debian usually handles
libs. Will this work hesa?

Excellent. Do consider going through the whole process of getting the
package into debian: i.e. sending a finished deb to the mentors list,
having a DD sponsor it and having it go through debian's fairly
rigorous testing process. This will mean that the deb you create will
be pretty high quality, and you will be able to create high quality
debs internally as well because of the experience allowing you to
make system admin a little easier.
