Ah, that's a thing I did not exactly know.

It looks like lynx does have translation tables for a shitload of
other legacy and ISO character sets though, is there any chance
to add such a translation mechanism?

If I remember correctly I have already experienced with that - but
kterm has its own problems (sometimes I have to set it to EUC to
view a sjis page).
