That means the AUCTeX and preview-latex releases will be synchronized?
For example if there is change in preview-latex only, which requires a
new release, this will mean a new AUCTeX release as well?  What
happens if AUCTeX is not in a releasable state in this situation?  Hm,
one could probably use the last working state for this.

If you don't provide tarballs, what exactly is a "standalone" release
of preview-latex then?

I'd set up a separate directory for each AUCTeX or prevew-latex
release.  The main directory is already too crowded.
