Obviously not carefully enough, I also thought that I could do the same
as I do with gnus and org mode, compile the el files and then set the
relevant paths, however that does not work with auctex.

However I am puzzled, since I do not really understand the different
between

-with-packagelispdir=‘auctex’ (should that really be *literally*
auctex)

And

--with-lispdir=/dir

So I tried

/configure --with-emacs=/opt/emacs24/bin/emacs
--with-prefix=/home/oub/ALLES
--with-lispdir=/home/oub/emacs/site-lisp/packages/auctex-11.88

The source files are now in different directory.

However this fails when running

make install:

,----
|
| ./mkinstalldirs /usr/local/share/info mkdir -p --
| /usr/local/share/info mkdir: cannot create directory
| `/usr/local/share/info': Permission denied make[1]: [install-auctex]
| Error 1 (ignored) rm -f /usr/local/share/info/auctex
| /usr/local/share/info/auctex-* /usr/bin/install -c -m 644 auctex.info
| /usr/local/share/info /usr/bin/install: cannot create regular file
| `/usr/local/share/info': Permission denied make[1]: ***
| [install-auctex] Error 1 make[1]: Leaving directory
| `/home/oub/ALLES/emacs/site-lisp/packages/src/auctex-11.88/doc' make:
| *** [install-docs] Error 2
`----

Which I don't understand since prefix is set to my home directory
