I tend to use a signature only for work correspondence. I could 
manually type --Jim at the end (as we have AFAICT only one Jim on 
the list ;-)) I have tended not to because I habitually "reply all" 
which will in my emailer (Eudora) prepend the original writer to my 
reply but you are right.

At minimum, when quoting, people could try to not snip out the 
authors of replies.
