No. The formatter uses the semantic markup to write a /tmp file
in ctags(1) format on the fly while formatting, paying attention
how the user's terminal width affects line numbers, and the man(1)
steering program invokes less(1) with the -T option. No environment
variables are involved.
What is relevant in the present context is that the mdoc(7)
format, which comes from the groff(1) world, supports that
kind of indexing.
