I'm sure all these things have been covered a billion times
and you're all probably tired of new people asking these questions
but could you point me in the right direction... I learn quickly.

I couldn't find a FAQ that detailed these questions.
It seems, from what I've seen while trying to find answers,
that MLDonkey is treated like some kind of second-class citizen...
by "official" eDonkey people, by eMule folks, and by Windoze people generally.

I think MLDonkey is great and I've built the CVS version repeatedly.
All the plug-ins work for me, I can reach all the networks -- even Yahoo IM.
I even patched it with what appeared to be the correct newest patches...
but I have some questions now:

there seems to be no documentation of the settings...

and the "suggestions" pages I've seen seem to be written by people
who have political views insisting we should upload more than we download so I don't trust the advice because it seems to be skewed against the user.

PASTE

I use Mac OS X 10.2.3 with XFree86, and I have most UNIX libs/apps through Fink. I find the GTK GUI is best for most things (even though it's kind of goofy)
but there are some things I can only do through the web interface.

* somehow GTK-GUI won't accept "paste" even though autocutsel works elsewhere.

SPEED ISSUES

I have a 1.5mb/128kb DSL connection...
(I hate ISPs for restricting our uploads - it's a scam they're pushing on us!) (even worse is PPPoE, which ITEF rejected as a standard because it's annoying)

Originally I tried max_hard_upload of 12 and max_hard_download of 192...
but I discovered max_hard_upload over 9 disconnects my PPPoE connection
and max_hard_upload over 7 kills my download speed.

I don't mind uploading but I'm doing a lot more uploading than downloading. I thought the benefit of being able to download from so many people at once
was that each person didn't have to upload incredible amounts...
but apparently I'm the upload king of my area. Who knew I was so generous?
I'm getting nothing back!

I read somewhere to divide our speeds by 8 to get our max_hard speeds
is this wrong? Kb/kb is confusing...

STUFF HANGS AT THE END
let's use Casino from ShareReactor as an example...

"Casino" (in three 800 MB pieces) has been hanging around for NINE DAYS now!
Part 3 has been at 99.9% (806.0 of 806.7 MB) for at least three days.
Part 1 is hovering at 75.8% and Part 2 at 44.8%... jeez!
I've manually given MLDonkey specific servers from Jigle but it barely moves.
Other files come and go but Casino is still there!!!

I've got a few more files hanging around in the upper ninety percent range...
how do I get them to move?

HOW TO UPGRADE DISTRIBS

I compile my own versions now but...
I think I've taken bad advice from this guy's distribution:
http://homepage.mac.com/michelmoreau

he said to get rid of all files/folders in your distrib folder
but for the files.ini file and the incoming and temp folders
and also kill ~/.mldonkey_gui_messages.ini and ~/.mldonkey_messages.ini

does this mean I'm throwing away the credit I've earned for uploading so much? is this guy's advice nuts? how do you people upgrade your distrib folders?

I bet all of this guy's advice is wrong!

PATCHES

I got patches from here
http://concept.free.free.fr/mldonkey/patches-against-CVS2.02/

is this Pango's site? is this somebody else's patches? Who is Pango?
Why do we need patches for something that's in CVS in the first place?

OTHER SETTINGS THAT MAKE ME WONDER

initial_score -- is this the credit scheme? am I earning credit?

max_name_len -- is this why the names are truncated in the GTK-GUI???

use_file_history = false -- is "true" here really a memory hog?
save_file_history = false I find MLDonkey is a memory hog anyway

max_opened_connections -- what kind of connections? UDP?

compute_md4_delay = 0.500000 - another setting I changed on questionable advice

minor_heap_size = 32 - in kB? no way with this memory hog...

max_sources_per_file = 600  - too many?
min_left_sources = 200      - left? right? good? I don't know

enable_server = true - if that's valid then explain this:

Exception Failure("Network.connected_servers not implemented by Donkey:server") in print_connected_servers--- Connected to 2 servers on the Donkey network ---

filter_search = false -- searching sucks with more than one keyword

tcpip_packet_size = 40 -- I'm forced to use the stupid PPPoE... so adjust it?

THE WEB INTERFACE

could somebody explain it...
I understand the GTK-GUI but the web interface isn't obvious

in the downloads section there's a heading of P/R/C over two checkboxes

RESHARE FILES

MLDonkey has trouble letting go...

thanks in advance, I'm really confused about this stuff
