Follow-up Comment #84, bug #31080 (group octave):

@dennisc_hi: If you were able to consistently reproduce this error
(independent on some time intervals), you were very likely seeing a different
issue. The one that was fixed with the last changes here required that some
file times were taken at specific points in some time intervals. The process
that I described was meant to make sure that these time intervals are sampled
such that the issue is triggered pretty reliably (Nick summarized that
correctly).

Testing means that we need to try and make sure that the time stamps are
actually correct now (and there isn't another thinko in the updated
implementation).

@Nick: It is probably not possible to implement a BIST for the issue that is
addressed by the latest change. If I understand correctly, it requires
*manually* creating files in a folder in the load path. Creating these files
automatically in a script would probably pass through different code paths.

(Btw: It turns out this wasn't caused by the same issue for which this report
was opened in 2010. If I understand correctly, it's a regression from bug
#59711 - around May 2023.)
