Follow-up Comment #11, patch #8919 (project octave):

It's a long time ago so my recollection of it is hazy, but AFAIR there were
issues with exporting symbols other than Java ones that were fixed by that
cset.
Perhaps since then things have changed (mind you: for better or for worse),
who knows, but in the mean time there have been no reasons to revisit this -
until now, of course :-)
