IMHO, documentation is more important than open source when it comes to file formats. It doesn't matter if it is open source if all you have to go by are a few cryptic comments and poorly documented source code.

I was not saying that source code = documentation!

That is just a dumb, though common, idea. You need an overview of what should be in there, how its organised, the choices for enumerated stuff, etc.

But without the code actually used, you can't easily answer some questions where there is a discrepancy.

wxWidgets scores there. Write one app and build it on Windows, Mac, Linux and others. I only normally support Windows and Linux.

We are basically a LINUX & Solaris shop, but some stuff is still used in DOS (the joys of dosemu on LINUX to keep old direct-to-hardware programs alive!) and a little on Windows.
