I was not even suggesting that they be destroyed or lost. I was only
suggesting that they be moved out of the source distribution into a new
set of "historical" and less essential documents, documents that need
be downloaded by any particular site only once. You as a developer
of course would be concerned about the CHANGES* documents, but I was
as much concerned about the entire "util" and "doc" directories.

Perhaps I can suggest not splitting the current distribution, but rather
forming a source+compilation essentials distribution.

Sticks and stones may break my bones ... No really, for you, and I'm
sure the majority of people on the list having a cluttered top directory
is no big deal. But I remember myself a year and a half ago. I might
have given up just doing my first ever breakout of a compressed-tarred
distribution. Why, if it doesn't HAVE to be that way?

A point well taken. If _http_ is stable for you and doesn't time out
all the time, then go for it:
        http://www.slcc.edu/cgi-bin/lynx/patch/
; it's great.

Just great. (Usually I do better than that at almost 9PM.)
