I had this "problem" for a while with screen..  It was taking around 5 seconds
to quit each shell, which was pretty annoying.  After whining about it for
a while on a site-local newsgroup, I realized it was user error -- I had
told screen to save 100000 lines of scrollback per virtual screen.
