Once again, just to make it clear: Postgresql does not store information in 
individual files, at least not in the conventional sense. It uses so-to-say 
it's own file system on top of the OS file system. That includes all stored 
procedures, trigger functions, indices etc.

If you want to retrieve, add or modify information within a Postgres database, 
there is no other way than going through the server - and that includes 
backup/restire. Would be bad if it would be otherwise. Interbase and Mysql 
are poorly designed in that aspect.
