No question that is a necessary feature of any decent search.

    You can choose to search in the recent bugs database, in
    the archived bugs database, or in both. This is an advantage.

As I understand it, the current elimination of archived bugs from the
default search is essentially like eliminating "old resolved
bugs". Right? (Unresolved bugs don't get archived, do they? I hope not.)

Thus, it seems to me that adding two more criteria to the search form(*):
1) filter by bug status (most importantly, resolved vs. unresolved);
2) filter by age of bugs (last changed, I guess), as we've already mentioned
would provide the same functionality, with none of the downsides of archiving.

Regrettably, I'm unable to offer any implementation help :(.
Maybe it's already possible?

Those who have seen my initial message won't be surprised that I agree
with Eli that archiving is a feature with a lot more negatives than
positives. --thanks, karl.

(*) By "the search form", I mean the "General Search" area on
 https://debbugs.gnu.org/
or at the bottom of the report for a particular package, e.g.,
